If you are taking both fast-acting and long-acting forms of Oxycontin, you may need to take the occasional fast-acting form for "breakthrough" pain.

If you are taking a long-acting form of Oxycontin, then you should take it regularly on time to get relief from pain. Long-acting Oxycontin is usually taken every 8 to 12 hours.

Do not cut, chew or crush long-acting tablets. Swallow them whole.

If you have a stomach disorder, take Oxycontin with food.

If you are taking Oxycontin with acetaminophen, do not take medicines containing excess acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or acetaminophen. This can be very high as a result of Tylenol® supplements.
